A 221-Year Legacy of Gentlemen's Grooming: Truefitt & Hill – More Than Just a Barbershop
In the global trend of men’s grooming, Barbershop has become a buzzword. However, it is Truefitt & Hill, certified by Guinness World Records as the "world’s oldest barbershop", that has perfected the spirit of Barbershop and passed it down for over two centuries. Founded in London, UK, in 1805, this brand is not only a microcosm of British gentlemanly culture but also interprets the original meaning and ultimate craftsmanship of Barbershop through 221 years of history.

To truly understand Truefitt & Hill, we must first clarify what a Barbershop is?
Different from ordinary hair salons, a Barbershop is an exclusive grooming space for men, originating in the European Middle Ages. Initially, it combined functions such as haircutting, shaving, basic medical care, and socializing, serving as a private venue for men to socialize and maintain their appearance.
Its core services focus on short haircuts, traditional wet shaves, beard styling and maintenance, emphasizing professionalism, retro style, and a ritualistic grooming experience.
With a calm and understated atmosphere and a focus on craftsmanship inheritance rather than trendy perming and dyeing, it is a realm where men showcase their demeanor and pursue exquisite details. Truefitt & Hill is the pinnacle of traditional high-end Barbershops, preserving the essence of this culture to this day.
The story of Truefitt & Hill began in London, UK, in 1805, founded by William Francis Truefitt, at the height of European traditional Barbershop culture.
From its inception, the brand, with its exquisite ancient grooming techniques, was granted a Royal Warrant by King George III of the United Kingdom as the royal barbershop. It has retained this prestigious honor for nine generations of the British royal family, making it one of the few century-old Royal Warrant Barbershops in the world.
In 1935, the Truefitt family merged with the grooming brand founded by Edwin Hill, and Truefitt & Hill was officially named. Over time, it has refined the craftsmanship and etiquette of traditional Barbershops with increasing precision.

The barber is giving the customer a traditional hot towel shave, a classic service at high-end men’s grooming establishments like Truefitt & Hill. He is applying a warm towel to the customer’s face to soften the beard, open pores, and soothe the skin in preparation for shaving. The entire process is ritualistic and professional.
The core services here still adhere to the ancient procedures of traditional Barbershops, among which the most representative Royal Hot Towel Shave is a model of ritual in the grooming industry.
Unlike modern electric razors, this service follows a century-old method: technicians first use hot towels to soften the beard, match the brand’s proprietary shaving cream and a handmade badger hair shaving brush to create a dense lather, then shave precisely with a straight razor.
Throughout the process, seven towels with different functions are used—hot compress, cleansing, soothing, and ice compress are applied layer by layer. Finally, aftershave and aftershave lotion are applied, with gentle and meticulous service that completely eliminates the stinging sensation of shaving. This is the core difference between a traditional Barbershop and an ordinary barbershop.
